The Creepiest Ad Ever – Palm Pre

I cannot even begin to tell you how creepy this ad is.  Just watch it and I’ll attempt a few words afterward.

See what I mean.  What is the advertising agency thinking?  Some things they should have thought about:

What is the target audience?  Androgenous aliens.

What do they want the target audience to do?  Freak people out so much that they don’t care about the product the alien happens to use.

Really – It is so far fetched it is distracting from the product.  I thought that the Bejiing inspired Palm Pre ad was fine, but now this? Do you think it is weird? Am I missing something?  And is it also strange on a more subconscious level because it actually encourages the viewer to be More Materialistic, and to forget the Bigger Questions (ex. How the Universe works)?  Basically, “Don’t worry about the universe, don’t debate it, don’t think at all.  People from Pluto (far far from the sun) will now think for your so you can enjoy your Palm Pre – in the moment.”  ZOMG! This is wrong on many different levels.

  1. I don’t really get that commercial. It’s not that creepy to me, it’s just… not appealing and kinda weird.

It’s a little ironic you say that, because materialism (in the philosophical sense) is about understanding how the Universe works. =)

  2. It is weird isn’t it.

My working definition for Materialism is a synonym for Consumerism, or blatant and unneeded spending money on things simply to have more things.
